Silent Skype calls can hide secret messages

Got a secret message to send? Say it with silence. A new technique can embed secret data during a phone call on Skype. "There are concerns that Skype calls can be intercepted and analysed," says Wojciech Mazurczyk at the Institute of Telecommunications in Warsaw, Poland. So his team's SkypeHide system lets users hide extra, non-chat messages during a call.












Mazurczyk and his colleagues Maciej Karaś and Krysztof Szczypiorski analysed Skype data traffic during calls and discovered an opportunity in the way Skype "transmits" silence. Rather than send no data between spoken words, Skype sends 70-bit-long data packets instead of the 130-bit ones that carry speech.












The team hijacks these silence packets, injecting encrypted message data into some of them. The Skype receiver simply ignores the secret-message data, but it can nevertheless be decoded at the other end, the team has found. "The secret data is indistinguishable from silence-period traffic, so detection of SkypeHide is very difficult," says Mazurczyk. They found they could transmit secret text, audio or video during Skype calls at a rate of almost 1 kilobit per second alongside phone calls.












The team aims to present SkypeHide at a steganography conference in Montpellier, France, in June.

Basketball: Lawson shines as Nuggets down Lakers

LOS ANGELES: Ty Lawson posted a double-double of 21 points and 10 assists Sunday to help Denver hand the Los Angeles Lakers a third straight NBA defeat, 112-105.

Danilo Gallinari scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Nuggets, draining a big three-pointer with 13.8 seconds remaining to stretch Denver's lead to 108-102 after Lakers star Kobe Bryant had trimmed the deficit to three points with a three-pointer.

Bryant led the Lakers with 29 points, 18 of them in the fourth quarter. Dwight Howard scored 14 points and tied his career high of 26 rebounds with four blocked shots and Steve Nash added 10 points and 13 assists.

But Bryant said the Lakers had too many defensive lapses and too many mistakes, including 18 turnovers.

"We've just got to try to focus on the next one," Bryant said. "We've got to execute better ... we've got to buckle down and try to minimize mistakes."

Pau Gasol scored 11 points -- all in the first half, and departed in the fourth quarter after an inadvertent elbow to his nose left him bleeding profusely.

Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said he expected the Spaniard to be ready for the Lakers' next game at Houston on Tuesday.

D'Antoni admitted that the Lakers' slump -- which has seen them fall to 15-18 for the season -- increased the pressure on the team.

"So be it," D'Antoni said. "That's the way it is and we've got to overcome it ... We can't shrug our shoulders or hang our heads. We've got to go out and fight as a unit."

The Nuggets notched their fifth win in seven games. Andre Miller scored 12 points with 10 assists. JaVale McGee added 17 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

Tegra 4, gaming dominate Nvidia's 2013 plans

LAS VEGAS--Nvidia has never been a timid company, and at
CES 2013, the chipmaker stepped on the gas.


Nvidia's aggressive plans for cloud gaming, its Tegra 4 quad core processor, and Nvidia Shield, its first proprietary gaming device, set a course for placing the company in the limelight this coming year.



Shield: Portable gaming companion
The
Android-based "Shield" is Nvidia's first attempt at selling a proprietary device. It strongly resembles a console controller, complete with joysticks and buttons. It can play Android, Tegra, and PC games, as well as play games streamed from the cloud. Still a prototype, Shield's name and final form could change before it hits store shelves. And that, said an Nvidia rep, could happen in a few months.


As Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang puts it, Shield is the culmination of Nvidia's work in processor architecture and cloud gaming over the last five years. With Shield, Huang says, you can "play any device in any place on any screen...in an untethered way."


While Shield could open up a new stream of revenue and brand recognition, it's niche enough that success is no guarantee.


Portable gaming devices are many, and Nvidia, a component maker, doesn't traditionally dabble in device-making. However, it isn't entirely unaccustomed to piecing together hardware. In fact, it works with component-providers to assemble reference designs that are then shopped around to Nvidia's usual hardware partners.


Tegra 4 goes full speed ahead
With Tegra 4 -- which boasts dramatically improved processing speeds and new camera tricks -- Nvidia hopes to put the squeeze on current and future threats from Qualcomm, Intel, Samsung, and recently MediaTek.


In fact, CEO Huang claims Tegra 4 as the "world's fastest mobile processor."


Yet competitors will soon nip at its heels, including Qualcomm, which has its own CES press event scheduled, in which quad-core mobile chipsets will surely play a starring role.


Nvidia has made inroads getting its chips onto more than 10 major
tablets in 2012, including the Google Nexus 7, Microsoft Surface RT, and the Asus Transformer Pad series.

However, despite often being the first to market with quad-core enhancements, the company has been less successful denting Qualcomm's considerable smartphone clout, both in terms of the number of handsets, and in terms of performance.

In CNET's quad-core smartphone shootout, for example, the Tegra 3-fueled HTC One X+ came in the middle of the pack, behind the HTC Droid DNA, powered by a quad-core Qualcomm processor.

Nvidia's plan to integrate the Icera modem -- known as the i500 modem -- into its chipset will be key for growing its Tegra business in 2013. An integrated modem will be a more appealing buy for smartphone-makers, who would otherwise have to place a separate modem into their phones, as well as to the Tegra unit.

In addition, the integrated i500 modem will help Nvidia chip away at Qualcomm's market share, it's largest and most influential rival.

Next gaming frontier: The cloud
Huang underscored gaming in a big way with Nvidia Grid, a "fully-integrated system product" that enables cloud gaming in a smooth, accurate way. The benefits are clear: no heavy storage on the device, and games that can be paused and played on any Tegra-powered device, be it a desktop or gaming laptop, a tablet, or a smartphone.

Nvidia didn't forget its bread-and-butter GeForce gaming card either. The new GeForce Experience, a PC client to auto-optimize video games for a given desktop's settings.

Nvidia's expansion into new nuts-and-bolts hardware as well as the cloud are aggressive and actionable. Nvidia is clearly here to play ball.

Pastor Accused of Killing Wives Faces Trial

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday for Pastor Arthur Schirmer, who is accused of killing his second wife and then staging a car accident to hide it.


Schirmer, 64, also faces a second trial at a later date for the death of his first wife. He has said he is innocent of all charges.


In 2008, the pastor and his wife, Betty, were involved in what appeared at the time to be a car crash. Schirmer told police at the time that he had been driving 55 mph and swerved to miss a deer, causing him to drive off the road, according to a police affidavit obtained by ABC News.


Schirmer also said at the time that his wife's head had come forward and struck the windshield, according to the affidavit. Betty died a day later and her body was cremated at the request of Schirmer.


It wasn't until a grisly suicide in 2010 inside Schirmer's office that authorities decided to revisit the case of Betty Schirmer's death and arrest the pastor.


The man who broke in and shot himself at the desk in Schirmer's office at the Reeders United Methodist Church, Joseph Mustante, was the husband of the pastor's secretary, Cynthia Mustante, Poconos Township Police Detective James Wagner said.

Mustante's suicide was prompted by the discovery that his wife and the pastor had apparently been having an affair, Wagner said. He was alone at the time of his death.


Investigators looking into the suicide say that several church parishioners had concerns about the deaths of Schirmer's two wives.


"That suicide eventually exposed the affair publicly and subsequent to that, questions arose about the loss of [Schirmer's] wives and his character became questionable," Wagner said.


Relaunching the investigation into the two deaths, Wagner said he quickly suspected that "foul play existed, and the car crash was staged," allegedly, by Schirmer. Wagner said investigators also believed there was something "suspicious" about the first wife's death, a marriage that investigators had not known about prior to the suicide.

Schirmer's first wife, Jewel, died in April 1999 from a traumatic brain injury after she purportedly fell down a flight of stairs in Lebanon, Pa., Wagner said.


Lebanon is about 100 miles southwest of Reeders, where Schrimer later moved with his second wife.


At the time of Jewel's death, Wagner said, a relative told police that he suspected Schirmer may have had a hand in his wife's death but that the investigation was "never completed."


On Dec. 11, 2012 -- more than 13 years after Jewel died, a Lebanon County judge ruled Schirmer would be tried for her murder.


When investigators looked at the death of Betty Schirmer, they saw inconsistencies, Wagner said.


"There was no airbag deployment and it simply looked like a car that had driven off the road at a very low speed," Wagner said. "It didn't match the injuries to [Betty's head].


"I know there are people out there who probably know him and feel like there is absolutely no way he would be capable of doing this," Wagner of Schirmer. "But they clearly don't know him."

Kirin to sell its Tokyo HQs to reduce debts

TOKYO: Japanese beverage giant Kirin has decided to sell its Tokyo headquarters in order to reduce debts as it aggressively buys foreign firms in a bid to expand its global reach, a report said Sunday.

Kirin Holdings and its main subsidiary Kirin Brewery Company will sell their headquarters buildings in Tokyo to raise an estimated 15 billion to 30 billion yen ($170 million to $340 million), the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper said.

The group will rent a different building in Tokyo as its global headquarters, the paper said.

The company will use the money to reduce debts accumulated after a series of major overseas acquisitions, according to the report.

In recent years the group has bought full or major stakes in Australian brewer Lion, Brazilian brewer Schincariol and Philippine brewer San Miguel, among others.

Many Japanese beverage firms have sought to expand overseas while the domestic market suffers chronic slow consumption, a shrinking population and younger people shunning alcohol.

Nvidia has been pretty quiet about any possible announcements at
CES, but the graphics chipmaker is likely to talk up Tegra, its processor for mobile devices. The company has had some success getting the chip into
tablets over the past year, but it continues to struggle in smartphones. Nvidia is counting on its new integrated processor, which combines the apps processor with the wireless connectivity on the same piece of silicon, to change that.

An alleged leak about Nvidia's Tegra 4 from last month showed 72 graphics cores, six times as many as those found in the current-generation Tegra 3. That many cores would mean substantially improved performance for smartphones, tablets, and other devices.

Gun Show Near Newtown Goes on Despite Anger

A little more than 40 miles from Sandy Hook Elementary School, where last month 20 first graders and six staff members were massacred, gun dealers and collectors alike ignored calls to cancel a gun show, and gathered for business in Stamford, Conn.


Four other gun shows with an hour of Newtown, Conn., recently cancelled their events in the wake of the shootings, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza broke in to the elementary school with a semi-automatic assault rifle and three other guns.


The organizers in Stamford emphasized their show only displayed antique and collectible guns, not military style assault weapons like the one used by Lanza in Sandy Hook.


Still, Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia had called for the show to close its doors, calling it "insensitive" to hold so close to the murders.


Gun show participant Sandy Batchelor said he wasn't sure about whether going ahead with the show was "insensitive," but said the shooter should be blamed, not the weapons he used.


"I don't have a solid opinion on [whether it is insensitive]," Batchelor said. "I'm not for or against it. I would defend it by saying it wasnt the gun."


In nearby Waterbury, the community cancelled a show scheduled for this weekend.


"I felt that the timing of the gun show so close to that tragic event would be in bad taste," Waterbury Police Chief Chief Michael J. Gugliotti said.












National Rifle Association News Conference Interrupted by Protesters Watch Video





Gugliotti has halted permits for gun shows, saying he was concerned about firearms changing hands that might one day be used in a mass shooting.


Across the state line in White Plains, N.Y, Executive Rob Astorino also canceled a show, three years after ending a had that had been in place since the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in Colorado. He said he felt the show would be inappropriate now.


But across the country, farther away from Connecticut, attendance at gun shows is spiking, and some stores report they can hardly keep weapons on their shelves with some buyers fearful of that the federal government will soon increase restrictions on gun sales and possibly ban assault weapons altogether.


"We sold 50-some rifles in days," said Jonathan O'Connor, store manager of Gun Envy in Minnesota.


President Obama said after the Sandy Hook shooting that addressing gun violence would be one of his priorities and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she would introduce an assault weapons ban this month.


But it is not just traditional advocates of gun control that have said their need to be changes in gun laws since the horrific school shooting.


Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat but a long-time opponent of gun control who like Hutchison has received an A rating from the NRA, have both come out in support of strengthening gun laws.


In Stamford, gun dealer Stuart English said participants at the gun show there are doing nothing wrong.


"I have to make a living. Life goes on," gun dealer Stuart English said.


ABC News asked English, what he thought about the mayor of Stamford calling the show "insensitive."


"He's wrong," English said. "This is a private thing he shouldn't be expressing his opinion on."
